The development of the Ford GPW was driven by the United States’ need for a reliable four-wheel-drive reconnaissance vehicle to support Allied forces in WWII. Initially, Bantam’s design won favor, but its limited production capabilities shifted the contract to Willys-Overland and Ford. The Army eventually selected the Willys design, but Ford’s larger production capacity earned it a massive order for 277,896 units. These Ford-built Jeeps were designated “GPW” for “General Purpose Willys.”

The Jeep’s capabilities went beyond its original reconnaissance role, proving adaptable for a wide range of military applications. It became a symbol of American resilience and military prowess during the war.

This particular GPW has an impressive history. It was registered in the Netherlands in 1996 and soon became a part of the prestigious Den Hartogh Ford Museum, one of the world’s largest Ford collections at the time. When the museum disbanded in 2018, The Dean Kronsbein Collection acquired the GPW, where it has been proudly maintained alongside other 4×4 vehicles from the same era.
