A rare gem from Lamborghini’s storied history, a 1976 Countach LP400 “Periscopio”, is poised to captivate collectors at RM Sotheby’s annual Miami sale. This striking example of Lamborghini’s engineering and design prowess, finished in the original Blu Tahiti color, represents a pivotal moment in the supercar narrative, blending performance with iconic design.

The LP400, known affectionately as “Periscopio” due to its unique periscopic mirror system designed to mitigate the vehicle’s limited rear visibility, marks the genesis of the Countach lineage. Crafted between 1974 and 1978, the LP400 showcases Marcello Gandini’s vision in its most unadulterated form – sleek, wedge-shaped, and devoid of the later models’ more aggressive lines and adornments. Its scarcity is underscored by the mere 150 units produced, making it a coveted piece for discerning collectors.

Chassis no. 1120172 not only boasts its original hue but also carries a storied provenance, having graced the lawns of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and featured in prominent automotive shows such as Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” and “Jay Leno’s Garage”. Under its bonnet lies the numbers-matching 3.9-liter V-12 engine, renowned for its power output of 375 hp, ensuring that this Countach is as thrilling to drive as it is to behold.

Despite a change from its original Tobacco leather interior to a more contemporary biscuit leather in 2007, this LP400 has been meticulously maintained across its three custodians since leaving Sant’Agata Bolognese. This attention to detail extends to its enhancements, including air conditioning and the addition of two external rearview mirrors, ensuring a blend of historical authenticity with practical modernity.

As RM Sotheby’s gears up for its Miami 2024 sale on March 1 and 2, anticipation builds for this automotive masterpiece. Potential bidders are encouraged to prepare for a spirited auction, with estimates suggesting a hammer price between $1.1 million and $1.4 million – a testament to the enduring allure and significance of the Lamborghini Countach LP400 “Periscopio”.
