Bugatti CEO Drives $4M Chiron to Munich Auto Show, Proving Hypercars Can Handle Real Roads

Most auto executives arrive at major shows aboard private jets or chauffeured sedans. Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac decided to take a different approach, by driving his personal Bugatti Chiron.

Rimac piloted the $4 million hypercar from his home base to the Munich auto show, covering roughly 310 miles on a single tank of fuel. The trip demonstrated not only the Chiron’s breathtaking performance capabilities but also its surprising civility when treated as daily transportation.

During the journey, Rimac averaged around 14.3 miles per gallon, a figure that would be impressive for most large luxury cars, let alone a 1,479-horsepower hypercar powered by a quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 engine. His average speed of 64 mph indicates he wasn’t crawling along either, though Rimac admitted to enjoying a few high-speed bursts on Germany’s unrestricted autobahn.

The numbers underscore the Chiron’s dual personality. While its 26.4-gallon tank can be drained in under 10 minutes at the car’s 261 mph top speed, it can also provide long-distance touring range when driven at highway pace. Advanced aerodynamics, a sophisticated dual-clutch gearbox, and precise power management allow the Bugatti to deliver efficiency alongside immense performance.

Equally striking was Rimac’s personal odometer reading—his Chiron has accumulated over 18,000 miles, far more than most hypercars that typically remain locked away in private collections. For the Bugatti boss, the trip doubled as a statement of philosophy: these machines are built to be driven, not hidden.

By rolling into Munich behind the wheel of a Chiron rather than stepping off a jet, Rimac showcased not only the engineering marvel of Bugatti’s flagship but also a reminder that even the most extreme cars can still function as road-going machines—albeit at a price few can afford.
