Mercedes-Benz Confirms Official G-Wagen Convertible, With U.S. Sales Planned - featured image

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed it will produce an official convertible version of the iconic G-Class SUV, marking the first time in decades that a factory-built open-top G-Wagen will reach American buyers.

The decision reflects both the enduring popularity of the G-Wagen and the demand for high-end luxury vehicles with distinctive body styles. Historically, Mercedes offered cabriolet variants of the G-Class in Europe, but they were discontinued more than a decade ago. Until now, enthusiasts in the U.S. seeking an open-air G-Wagen had to rely on aftermarket conversions.

Mercedes executives say the new convertible will retain the G-Class’s hallmark off-road capability while embracing modern luxury touches. That means body-on-frame construction, locking differentials, and a low-range gearbox will remain part of the package, paired with a folding roof system designed to meet the same durability standards as the SUV’s fixed-roof sibling.

The automaker has not released specifications, but industry analysts expect the cabriolet to share its powertrains with the standard G-Class lineup. That could mean a turbocharged six-cylinder option alongside the AMG-tuned V8 for higher trims. Mercedes is also expected to eventually integrate electrified powertrains, in line with its broader shift toward hybrid and electric technology.

For the U.S. market, the G-Wagen convertible is being positioned as a limited-production, high-demand model. Pricing details have not been disclosed, but given the base G550 already carries a six-figure price tag, analysts expect the convertible to start well above $150,000.
