Rarity often breeds desirability in a car and that’s certainly the case with this 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS. With three days of bidding left on this rare “chairs and flares” US-spec spyder, the fact it’s one of only 91 built is helping to push the top bid ever higher.

McLaren Elva poised to wow at upcoming auction.

At the writing of this article, the current top bid is $550,000, an amount we fully expect to balloon further, particularly in the final few hours. The fact that it presents fantastically in brilliant Giallo Fly with a black removable targa top along with flared fenders and other perks only further fuels interest in this ride.

The interior is just as compelling with Daytona-style seats upholstered with Nero Connolly leather. There’s also a MOMO steering wheel, Borletti AC, and a Becker AM/FM radio. Power windows add another welcome convenience.

Whomever the new owner might be, they’ll surely enjoy the 2.4-liter quad-cam V6 engine with tripe Weber carburetors. Adding to the driving enjoyment is a five-speed manual transaxle and a Tubi-style exhaust and servo-assisted disc brakes. While some might make this a garage queen, we think it would be blast to drive on canyon roads.

Many today have grown to love the Dino, a sports car built by Ferrari to appeal to a less affluent customer base. This, the 246, is the more powerful version which followed up on the rather tepid first attempt, and so is far more valued by collectors and enthusiasts.

While it’s true the Dino had a large production run for Ferrari at over 3,500 units assembled from 1969 to 1974, this one stands out from the crowd with its “chairs and flairs” offering, referring of course to the Daytona-style seats and fender flares added for the wider Campagnolo wheels. That’s why bidding has been so fierce and we expect it to intensify.
