In 1954, the Chevrolet Corvette was still finding its footing. Only its second year of production, the fledgling fiberglass-bodied sports car had yet to become the American icon it would later be. That makes surviving, well-preserved examples like this Polo White 1954 Corvette Convertible genuinely compelling artifacts of early automotive ambition. Restored more than two decades ago to its factory-original color combination, this C1 Corvette is described by its seller as being in “excellent condition” and stands as what the seller calls a great piece of Corvette history.

Period-Correct Power Under the Hood

Every 1954 Corvette left the factory with the same drivetrain, and this car honors that formula even though its engine is a replacement unit. Beneath the hood sits a 235.5-cubic-inch “Blue Flame” OHV inline-six. While not the car’s numbers-matching original, the engine has been correctly detailed to reflect factory specifications. The block carries the Corvette-correct “F54YG” stamping, and the head shows a casting number of 3835913, though it’s worth noting the strictly correct 1954 Corvette head casting number is 3836241.

One of the more charming period details is the trio of “bullet”-style air cleaners feeding the engine. These were used on earlier 1954 production cars below serial number 002906, and their presence here reflects the care taken during the restoration to match the factory-original look of an early ’54. The six is paired with a Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission, which was the only gearbox offered that year, complete with the floor-mounted shifter that defined the era’s driving experience.

Polo White Over Red Vinyl

The Corvette wears its original Polo White paint, reapplied during the restoration. The finish is reported to be in very good condition with no significant blemishes, and the exterior chrome trim is described as similarly well preserved. A tan folding top completes the convertible’s profile.

Inside, the red vinyl cockpit was restored to original condition and shows little wear. As with all 1954 models, the cabin is equipped with a heater and a “Wonderbar” AM radio. The car rides on stock steel wheels, correctly painted red and finished with full wheel covers, wrapped in reproduction Firestone whitewall bias-ply tires that suit the period look perfectly.

Condition and What It Needs

For a restoration that’s now more than twenty years old, this Corvette appears to be holding up remarkably well, with most of the work reportedly completed in 2003 prior to the current seller’s ownership. No issues are reported with the manual steering or the braking system. The single noted functional concern is the windshield wipers, which do not operate properly.

The sale includes an NCRS technical manual along with additional literature, useful references for any future owner looking to maintain or further authenticate the car.

Ownership and Documentation

Because Connecticut does not issue titles for vehicles of this age, the seller states the Corvette will be sold on the proper transfer document in his name. The car is located in Hamden, Connecticut, and shows 16,528 miles on the odometer.

For collectors drawn to the earliest chapters of America’s sports car story, this 1954 Corvette offers an appealing blend of authentic detailing, an attractive and durable older restoration, and the classic Polo White over red presentation that defined the breed in its formative years.
