Rare 1961 Ferrari California Spyder Fetches $19.5 Million at Monaco Auction

A rare and highly coveted 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder has sold for $19.5 million at an auction in Monaco, underscoring the enduring demand for historically significant luxury automobiles.

The sale places the vehicle among the most valuable classic Ferraris ever auctioned, reflecting both its rarity and its reputation as one of the most iconic designs produced by the Italian automaker. Only 56 examples of the 250 GT SWB California Spyder were ever built, making each surviving model a prized collector’s item.

This particular car holds a distinct place within that limited production run as the 26th unit manufactured. It features several defining characteristics, including covered headlamps, low-mounted orange signal lamps on the front wings, and a clean exterior design without bumper brackets. The vehicle’s exterior is finished in Bianco Saratoga, complemented by an interior trimmed in Nero vaumol leather, offering a classic and refined contrast.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the model is celebrated for its engineering and performance capabilities. The 250 GT SWB California Spyder is powered by a 3.0-liter V12 engine paired with a four-speed gearbox. Built using lightweight alloy construction, the engine incorporates dual overhead camshafts and two valves per cylinder, producing an output of 280 horsepower. This combination of design and mechanical sophistication contributed to the model’s success on both road and track.

The California Spyder has long been regarded as a symbol of Ferrari’s golden era, blending elegant styling with competitive racing credentials. Its limited production and enduring legacy continue to drive strong interest among collectors worldwide.

The Monaco auction result highlights the ongoing strength of the classic car market, particularly for vehicles with a combination of rarity, provenance, and performance heritage.
