Rare 1968 Shelby GT500KR Convertible Set for April 2026 Auction

A rare 1968 Ford Shelby GT500KR convertible is scheduled to cross the auction block in April 2026, drawing attention for its limited production, documented history and detailed restoration.

Designated as Lot #ST0085, the vehicle is set to run on Saturday during the April auction event. The convertible is one of just 518 GT500KR examples produced, making it one of the more exclusive variants of the Shelby lineup from that era. According to its Elite Marti Report, it is also one of only three built with its exact factory configuration.

Finished in Wimbledon White with a saddle-colored interior, the two-door convertible was originally delivered to Frank Crate Ford in Elk Grove, California. The car retains its original sheet metal and fiberglass components, adding to its authenticity and appeal among collectors.

Under the hood, the Shelby is powered by a 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet V-8 engine rated at 335 horsepower. It is paired with a C6 automatic transmission and a 3.50 Traction-Lok differential. Additional mechanical features include power steering and power brakes with front discs, aligning with the performance expectations of the GT500KR designation.

The vehicle has undergone a comprehensive rotisserie restoration using original and new old stock parts. Its condition and presentation have earned multiple awards over the years, including a Best of Show honor at the All Ford Show held at John Force Race Station in 2009. It also secured top placements at several Southern California events, including a first-place finish at the Los Angeles SAAC Tony Sousa Car Show and recognition at the Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance.

Additional features include bucket seats with a center console, a tilt steering column, a roll bar, auxiliary gauges and a pushbutton AM radio. The car rides on Shelby/Cragar 5-spoke hubcaps fitted with Goodyear Speedway tires.

Documented in the Shelby Registry and bearing an autograph from Carroll Shelby on the glovebox door, the convertible represents a highly collectible example of late-1960s American performance heritage.
