A 1935 Auburn 851 Phaeton with longstanding ties to the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg community is set to cross the auction block during the Auburn Spring 2026 event on April 24. Offered as Lot #108 from The Oscar Roberts Estate Collection, the classic automobile represents a blend of historic pedigree, careful restoration, and continued enthusiast involvement.
Produced during Auburn Automobile Company’s peak years, the 851 model reflects the brand’s reputation for combining performance, styling, and accessible luxury. Under the direction of E.L. Cord, Auburn vehicles gained recognition for their engineering advancements and distinctive design, securing a lasting place in the Classic Era of American automotive history.
This particular example traces its modern ownership history to the 1990s, when it was acquired by Indiana-based collectors Bob and Helen Cramer from noted enthusiast Tom Crook. The Cramers completed a restoration in 2001, after which the car became a familiar presence at ACD Club events. It earned official ACD Club certification in 2002 and was later featured in a 2005 club newsletter before being acquired that same year by Oscar and Bonita Roberts.
For more than two decades, the Roberts family incorporated the Auburn into their collection, maintaining it between residences in Georgia and Auburn, Indiana. While in Indiana, the vehicle was housed in a restored former dealership and service station, a location closely tied to the city’s automotive heritage.
Despite its earlier restoration, the car underwent a comprehensive ground-up refurbishment beginning in 2015. The project involved multiple specialized shops handling bodywork, plating, mechanical systems, and finishing details. Completed in 2016, the restoration returned the vehicle to a high standard, allowing it to participate regularly in tours and major gatherings, including the annual ACD Festival.
Recent maintenance in 2024 by Auburn-Cord specialist Ken Clark included engine servicing and mechanical updates, ensuring continued drivability. The car also took part in the 2025 Hoosier Tour, further reinforcing its active presence within the collector community.
Powered by a Lycoming eight-cylinder engine paired with a Columbia two-speed dual-ratio axle, the Auburn 851 remains known for its touring capability. Accompanied by extensive documentation and certification materials, the vehicle stands as a well-preserved example poised for its next chapter among collectors and enthusiasts.
