Mercedes-AMG Prepares Next GT Black Series as Most Extreme Variant Yet

Zwei Extrem-Sportler, eine Basis: Mercedes-AMG kündigt neuen GT3 und Black Series an // Two extreme sports cars, one platform: Mercedes-AMG announces new GT3 and Black Series

Mercedes-AMG is advancing development of a new GT Black Series model, positioning it as the most extreme version yet within its performance-focused lineup. The upcoming model is expected to surpass the capabilities of the current GT range, including the GT 63 and the more track-oriented GT 63 Pro, signaling a continued push toward higher performance and closer ties to motorsport engineering.

The existing GT lineup provides a benchmark for what the new model aims to exceed. The GT 63 produces 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, while the GT 63 Pro increases output to 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft. The Pro variant is capable of accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds and reaching a top speed of 197 mph. AMG has indicated that the next Black Series will move significantly beyond these figures.

Central to the new model’s development is an evolved version of AMG’s flat-plane-crank V8 engine. This engine architecture, previously introduced in the 2020 GT Black Series, marked a major shift in AMG’s performance strategy. That earlier model generated 720 horsepower and achieved a top speed of 202 mph, along with a 0 to 62 mph time comparable to current GT variants. It also set a production car lap record at the Nürburgring, reinforcing its track-focused credentials.

The forthcoming Black Series is expected to build on that foundation with further refinements in both power delivery and engineering. AMG has confirmed that an updated version of the flat-plane-crank V8 will also appear in a limited-production Mythos model based on the CLE coupe, suggesting shared performance technologies across future high-end offerings.

Beyond the engine, development efforts are heavily focused on aerodynamics and chassis tuning. Prototype vehicles feature more aggressive aerodynamic elements and a setup designed for increased circuit performance compared to standard GT models. The new Black Series is being developed alongside a GT3 race car, allowing AMG to directly apply lessons learned from motorsport, particularly in cooling systems, aerodynamic efficiency, and suspension design.

This parallel development approach reflects AMG’s broader strategy of aligning its road cars more closely with racing programs. The Black Series designation, first introduced in 2006, has consistently been reserved for the brand’s most focused and limited-production models. With the next iteration, AMG aims to further elevate that legacy by delivering a road car engineered with a clear emphasis on track capability and performance innovation.
