Custom Buick GNX-Inspired El Camino Blends Muscle Car Heritage With Modern Performance

A heavily modified 1984 Chevrolet El Camino, reimagined with Buick GNX styling and performance, is attracting attention as bidding continues on an online auction platform. The custom build, located in Charlotte, North Carolina, represents a detailed fusion of two iconic General Motors vehicles, combining the utility of the El Camino with the aggressive design and performance cues of the rare GNX.

The transformation centers on both appearance and engineering. The exterior has been carefully reshaped to replicate the look of a factory GNX, featuring widened wheel arches, signature fender vents, and a sculpted hood cowl. The attention to detail extends to the overall bodywork, which has been crafted to give the impression of an original production model rather than a custom project.

Under the hood, the original 5.0-liter V8 has been replaced with a turbocharged 4.1-liter Buick V6. Equipped with a Precision turbocharger, the engine produces 470 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque, according to a dyno sheet provided with the vehicle. Power is delivered through a THM200-R4 four-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels. The drivetrain also incorporates a Buick GNX-sourced 10-bolt rear axle with 3.73 gearing and Positraction, reinforcing the performance-oriented nature of the build.

The vehicle’s design continues to emphasize a cohesive GNX theme. It rides on 18-inch mesh wheels with a contrasting outer lip, while smoked taillights and amber front markers provide subtle visual accents against the predominantly black finish. Inside, the cabin features custom upholstery with Buick branding, including a logo integrated into the headrests. Additional details include a Buick-badged steering wheel and a dash-mounted plaque referencing GNX heritage.

Performance upgrades extend beyond the engine. The El Camino has been fitted with coilover suspension and a rear four-link setup, aimed at improving handling and stability. Drilled and slotted brake rotors have also been added to enhance stopping power.

At the time of reporting, bidding has reached $41,500, with several days remaining before the auction concludes. The unique combination of styling, performance, and craftsmanship has positioned the vehicle as a standout among custom builds, with interest expected to increase as the sale deadline approaches.
