An exceptionally rare and pristine 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 is set to be one of the highlights of RM Sotheby’s annual Monterey Car Week auction. This iconic race car, known for its rarity and impressive performance pedigree, could fetch up to $1.5 million when it crosses the auction block.

The 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 was a standout among Porsche’s 1990s racing machines, designed as a lightweight, high-performance variant of the 964 generation. Built for the track, the RSR 3.8 was a rear-wheel-drive beast powered by a naturally aspirated, air-cooled 3.8-liter inline-six engine. Depending on the regulations of the competition, this engine could produce up to 375 horsepower and 264 lb-ft of torque, making it a formidable contender in Europe’s GT racing series.

What makes this particular RSR 3.8 even more special is its exclusivity and immaculate condition. Porsche produced just 51 examples of the Carrera RSR 3.8, with only two finished in the striking Guards Red. The car up for auction, chassis number 496090, is one of those two. The Guards Red paint covers the entire body, accented only by black trim along the headlamps, windshield, and windows, giving the car a bold and aggressive appearance. The interior, true to its racing roots, is minimalistic, featuring Recaro racing seats, a fire extinguisher, and a stripped-down cabin devoid of any unnecessary comforts.

Remarkably, this Carrera RSR 3.8 has only 25 miles on the odometer, making it a virtually untouched piece of automotive history. After being sold to Walter Scheuermann in Germany in December 1993, the car was later acquired by a prominent Japanese collector, where it remained for two decades. It was imported to the United States in 2013 and has since been meticulously maintained by its current owner. A $40,000 service performed by Retrosport in San Rafael, California, ensured that the car is in top condition and ready for the road.

This rare Porsche will be among more than 200 cars auctioned by RM Sotheby’s during Monterey Car Week, which runs from August 15 to 17. Given its extraordinary condition, low mileage, and rarity, the auction house anticipates it will sell for between $1.25 million and $1.5 million.
