Custom 1984 Chevrolet K5 Blazer Build Blends Classic Style With Modern Performance

A fully restored and heavily modified 1984 Chevrolet K5 Blazer is drawing attention for its blend of vintage design and modern performance, showcasing what is possible when classic SUVs are reimagined with contemporary engineering.

Dubbed the “Riptide Blazer,” the vehicle was built by K5 Squared with a focus on delivering both show-quality aesthetics and updated drivability. The project reportedly involved more than $300,000 in upgrades, transforming the original utility vehicle into a high-end custom build.

At the heart of the Blazer is a 6.2-liter V-8 engine paired with a Gen 5 10-speed automatic transmission. This modern drivetrain replaces the original powertrain, offering improved performance and smoother shifting compared to the factory setup from the mid-1980s.

The exterior features a blue finish complemented by a black interior, maintaining a classic color combination while incorporating modern touches. The build includes a removable black hardtop, allowing the SUV to function as a full convertible, adding versatility and open-air capability.

Underneath, the vehicle has been fitted with a custom Frame Werx independent front suspension chassis along with upgraded rear shocks. These modifications are designed to enhance ride comfort and handling, while 35-inch Nitto Grappler all-terrain tires provide off-road capability. Additional exterior upgrades include LED lighting and a larger 31-gallon fuel tank for extended driving range.

Inside, the Blazer has been extensively modernized. The cabin features Dakota Digital GFX gauges and climate control, along with a large Alpine touchscreen display. Convenience and comfort upgrades include power windows, a backup camera, remote start functionality and a Vintage Air system. A MOMO steering wheel and new black carpeting contribute to the refreshed interior design.

Audio has also been a priority, with a Kevlar subwoofer and Mosconi amplifiers integrated into the system.

The result is a classic SUV that retains its iconic shape while delivering a driving experience and features more in line with modern vehicles, highlighting the growing appeal of restomod builds in today’s automotive market. See it here.
