Lexus appears to be in the final stages of developing its first true supercar since the LFA, as new spy footage shows a heavily camouflaged prototype — likely the production-bound LFR — testing alongside a high-powered benchmark: the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance.
Filmed navigating the winding roads of Angeles Crest Highway, the Lexus prototype was spotted following closely behind the 805-horsepower AMG hybrid coupe. The pairing strongly suggests that Lexus engineers are using the AMG GT, which features a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 plug-in hybrid system, as a performance benchmark for the LFR’s final calibration.
Automotive journalist Jonny Lieberman, who shared the sighting on Instagram, confirmed the LFR rides on a brand-new supercar platform developed in-house by Lexus. While official specs remain undisclosed, rumors point to a V8 hybrid powertrain—potentially delivering output competitive with or just below its German rival.
The LFR’s silhouette remains obscured by camo wrap, but its proportions are unmistakably exotic. The vehicle sits low to the ground, with a wide stance and what appears to be a long wheelbase. The rear features slim, horizontal taillights stretching nearly the full width of the car. Notably absent is the fixed rear wing seen on earlier test cars, possibly indicating this prototype is equipped with an optional aero package or active aerodynamic elements.
