Hennessey’s entire public identity is a number. 270.49 mph, set by a Venom GT in 2014, still listed on the company’s own about page as the fastest manual car in the world. The Venom F5 was engineered to top 300. So the interesting thing about the new Blackbird isn’t that it has a gated six-speed or a naturally aspirated V8. It’s that Hennessey has announced a hypercar with a top speed of 220 mph — fifty slower than a car it built twelve years ago — and framed that as the point. John Hennessey’s own line in the release: “This is not a numbers car.”

Seventy-one will be built, at $2.5 million before taxes, with customer production targeted for 2029-2030. More than two-thirds are already spoken for, which happened before anyone outside Sealy had seen it.

The engine is the hard part

The centerpiece is an all-new 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 developed with Ilmor Engineering, targeting 800-850 hp and more than 9,000 rpm. Hennessey expects it to be the highest-revving and most powerful naturally aspirated road-car V8 ever.

Run the specific output: 800-850 hp from 6.2 liters works out to roughly 129 to 137 horsepower per liter with no boost. For scale, Hennessey’s own twin-turbo 6.6-liter Fury V8 makes 2,031 bhp in the Venom F5-M — around 308 hp per liter. Turbochargers are simply a more efficient way to buy horsepower, which is exactly why almost nobody builds engines like the Blackbird’s anymore.

Getting there without boost means rpm, and rpm at 6.2 liters means a radically oversquare architecture — big bore, very short stroke — to keep mean piston speed inside survivable limits. Hennessey hasn’t published bore and stroke, but the physics don’t negotiate. It also means torque is the quiet casualty. At 850 hp and 9,000 rpm, you’re looking at somewhere near 500 lb-ft, arriving high in the range rather than sitting at idle waiting to overwhelm the rear tires.

That’s the joke buried in the spec sheet: the Blackbird’s six-speed gated manual is a substantially easier engineering problem than the F5-M’s, despite the F5-M getting there first. Roughly 500 lb-ft through a manual is well-understood territory. Two thousand horsepower through one is not.

Choosing Ilmor makes sense in that context. The company was founded in 1983 by Mario Illien, Paul Morgan, and Roger Penske to build Indy engines, went on to the Mercedes F1 program, and currently develops Chevrolet’s IndyCar V6. High-rpm valvetrain durability is the specific thing that outfit knows how to do.

The analog claim, honestly assessed

The cabin is genuinely screen-free: no infotainment display, no digital gauges, no steering-wheel buttons, a large central analog tachometer, a physical ignition key, and a dash-mounted whiskey compass as standard. Navigation and CarPlay run off the owner’s phone, held in a bespoke holster — so the no-screen car has a screen, it’s just the one you brought.

But the Blackbird runs ABS, traction control, adaptive suspension, and active rear stabilizers that deploy at 71 mph and sit at plus or minus 71 degrees. There are ECUs and sensors throughout. “Analog” here describes the interface, not the engineering, and that’s the honest read.

For owners, though, the screen-free approach has a real long-term benefit that nobody markets: infotainment is the single fastest-dating component in any modern car. A 2029 touchscreen running a 2029 operating system will look and feel like a flip phone by 2040, and replacement units for a 71-car production run don’t exist. A mechanical tachometer and physical switchgear can be rebuilt indefinitely. This is a durability decision dressed up as a philosophy.

Why the car is four years out

Hennessey says the Blackbird is homologated for key global markets, and that word explains the 2029-2030 timeline better than any development narrative.

There is no shortcut available. The federal low-volume exemption in 49 CFR 586 covers up to 325 vehicles per year, but only replicas — each car must resemble an original produced at least 25 years earlier. An original-design hypercar gets none of that relief. The Blackbird must be certified against the full slate of federal safety standards: occupant protection, side impact, roof crush with gullwing doors, door retention, tire pressure monitoring. The engine needs EPA and CARB certification as a brand-new family, including onboard diagnostics and emissions durability over the full useful life. Certifying a clean-sheet engine takes years of calibration and durability running before a single customer car is legal to sell.

Then there’s the tax. A 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 in a rear-drive two-seater is not going to clear 22.5 mpg combined, so the Blackbird lands on the gas-guzzler schedule. The rate table maxes out at $7,700 for anything under 12.5 mpg. On a $2.5 million car that’s noise, but it’s a real line on the window sticker, and it’s the sort of thing that gets forgotten when people talk about naturally aspirated V8s making a comeback.

Practical notes for the seventy-one

A 2.5-second 0-60 from a rear-drive manual on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires — not the more aggressive Cup 2 R — means every one of those launches is going to be brutal on a clutch. Plan on the clutch being a consumable rather than a lifetime part, and budget for a specialist rather than a local shop, because there is no parts network for a 71-car model.

The Cup 2 choice is itself informative. It’s a road-biased compound with meaningfully better wet behavior and tread life than a track tire, which fits a car engineered to cover more than 800 miles in a day with luggage space for two carry-ons and four cup holders. This is a grand tourer wearing hypercar proportions.

Buyers should also think hard about a four-year gap between deposit and delivery. Specification gets locked years before the car exists, deposits sit with a manufacturer for that entire window, and any allocation resale in the interim is contractual rather than physical. Whatever the deposit agreement says about protection, escrow, and transferability is worth more scrutiny than the paint sample. On the insurance side, a car that hasn’t been built can’t be scheduled on an agreed-value policy yet, but it’s worth having that conversation with an underwriter early, because a $2.5 million car with no comparable sales history and no series production has to be valued on the build contract.

The Blackbird makes its public debut on August 14 at The Quail in Carmel, the same day Hennessey has to explain to a lawn full of collectors why its newest hypercar is its slowest.
