Restored 1974 Porsche 914 Limited Edition Built for Classic Challenge on Bring a Trailer

A 1974 Porsche 914 Limited Edition that spent nearly 20 years off the road before undergoing a full restoration is up for auction at no reserve, with bidding at $25,000 and five days remaining.

The car belongs to a small run of roughly 1,000 Limited Edition 914s built for the 1974 model year, a package Porsche introduced to mark its dominance in the Can-Am racing series. North American buyers had two color choices, and neither was subtle: Light Ivory with Phoenix Red accents, or black with Sunflower Yellow accents. This example was ordered in the latter.

It stayed with one family for decades, sitting unused for close to 20 years before Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas bought it in 2021 as a restoration candidate. The dealer’s target was the 2022 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge, a competition that pits dealer-completed projects against one another, and the work took seven months.

Technicians pulled the car apart down to bare metal and repainted it in the original factory scheme. The mid-mounted 2.0-liter flat-four came out for a rebuild, as did the five-speed manual transaxle. The engine left the factory with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection and retains it, though a Web Cam camshaft was fitted during reassembly. The dealer puts revised output above 100 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque, modest numbers by modern standards but healthy for a lightweight mid-engine coupe of the era.

Suspension and brake systems were also overhauled. The car rides on 15-inch Mahle alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli tires, with discs at all four corners.

Inside, the black interior was retrimmed, including the fixed-back bucket seats. Period equipment remains: a push-button Blaupunkt radio, a heater, wind-up windows and three-point belts. VDO gauges include a central tachometer, a 150-mph speedometer and a fuel gauge, with a clock and auxiliary readouts in the center stack.

The five-digit odometer reads 45 miles, reflecting only the distance covered since the restoration wrapped. Total mileage is not known.

A removable black Targa top, fog lights and a driver-side mirror round out the exterior. The sale includes a Porsche Classic Technical Certificate, photographs documenting the restoration and a clean Nevada title.
