An exceptionally well-preserved 1984 Ferrari 288 GTO is scheduled to be offered at auction with an estimated value between €6 million and €7 million, underscoring the continued strength of the market for Ferrari’s most historically significant road cars.
Built as a homologation model for the now-defunct Group B racing category, the Ferrari 288 GTO represents a pivotal moment in the brand’s evolution. Although the car never competed in Group B, Ferrari produced just 272 examples, making it one of the rarest limited-production models of the modern era. Today, it is widely regarded as a foundational car that bridged Ferrari’s racing ambitions with its future road-going supercars.
The example offered is notable for its exceptional originality and limited use, showing just over 1,500 kilometers at the time it was catalogued. The car has had only two owners since new and has remained within a single family collection for more than 30 years. It is documented with a Ferrari Classiche Red Book and supported by a detailed history report compiled by noted Ferrari historian Marcel Massini.
Power comes from Ferrari’s 2.855-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine, producing 400 horsepower and paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Advanced for its time, the drivetrain features dual IHI turbochargers, Behr intercoolers, and electronic fuel injection. The lightweight tubular steel chassis is clothed in aluminum and Kevlar composite bodywork, contributing to the model’s reputation for both performance and balance.
According to inspection records, the car retains numerous original features, including factory-applied underbody wax and its original tires from 1985. Interior materials, paint condition, and exterior surfaces reportedly show minimal wear, consistent with extremely limited use over four decades.
Originally sold new through an official Ferrari dealer in Rome, the car later passed to a collector with ties to Formula 1 before being evaluated by Ferrari’s authorized dealer network in Germany. Issued its Classiche certification in 2024, the 288 GTO is accompanied by its original manuals, tool kit, and early paperwork.
