Modena Automobil is turning heads with its latest restomod, Project MA-01, a modern reimagining of Maserati’s beloved ’90s grand tourer, the Shamal. Revealed as a prototype, this exclusive model pays homage to the original while integrating modern performance and design elements. If it enters production, the MA-01 will offer enthusiasts a limited run of just 33 units, each priced at $638,000.

Project MA-01 retains the angular charm of Marcello Gandini’s original Shamal design, yet adds a contemporary edge. Modena Automobil has introduced a new body kit, enhancing the car’s aggressive stance with sharper wheel arches, larger inlets, and an upgraded LED lighting package. A prominent rear spoiler completes the look, giving the MA-01 a modern yet nostalgic feel. Although the interior hasn’t been revealed, reports indicate a likely update with a digital instrument cluster, maintaining the original Shamal’s iconic oval shape.

Under the hood, the MA-01’s performance leaps forward with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 from today’s Maserati Ghibli, capable of producing 500 horsepower. This upgrade enables the car to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 177 mph—significantly faster than the original Shamal’s 326-hp twin-turbo V8. Additional mechanical enhancements include a stripped and reinforced chassis, reengineered suspension, and Brembo brakes for optimal handling and stopping power.

Though still in its prototype phase, Modena Automobil appears committed to bringing the MA-01 to production, blending Maserati’s classic design with modern engineering for a new generation of collectors. With its limited availability and high-performance specs, Project MA-01 is set to become a coveted addition to the world of high-end restomods, representing a revival of the grand tourer era with modern speed and precision.
