Restored 1963 Ford Thunderbird Set for Mecum Indy 2026 Debut

A meticulously restored 1963 Ford Thunderbird is scheduled to cross the auction block at Indy 2026, showcasing a blend of classic styling and detailed craftsmanship. The vehicle, set to appear on Saturday, May 16 at Mecum Indy, represents a significant investment in restoration, with an estimated $160,000 spent to return the car to a highly refined condition.

The Thunderbird is powered by a 390 cubic-inch V8 engine rated at 300 horsepower. Equipped with a single Holley four-barrel carburetor, the engine is paired with a three-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. This configuration reflects the performance standards of the era while maintaining the vehicle’s original mechanical character.

The car features a suspension setup typical of early 1960s American luxury vehicles, including an independent front suspension with coil springs and a rear live axle supported by semi-elliptical leaf springs. Braking is handled by a four-wheel power-assisted hydraulic drum system, providing period-correct functionality.

Visually, the Thunderbird stands out with its Medium Turquoise exterior, complemented by a matching interior. The cohesive color scheme emphasizes the car’s design, which was influenced by Bill Boyer. Exterior details include fender skirts, full-size wheel covers, and white stripe tires, all contributing to its distinctive appearance and reinforcing its identity as a luxury coupe of its time.

The odometer reads 5,780 miles, although the total mileage is not specified. As a restored vehicle, the reading may reflect mileage accumulated since completion of the project rather than its lifetime use.

With its combination of design heritage, mechanical authenticity, and extensive restoration work, the 1963 Thunderbird is expected to draw attention from collectors and enthusiasts at the Mecum Indy 2026 auction. The vehicle represents a snapshot of early 1960s automotive design, highlighting both performance and style in a single offering.

This year marks the 39th Mecum Indy with over 3,000 vehicles for sale and many lots of collectible memorabilia. Visit the website to see fantastic vehicles- MANY AT NO RESERVE!
