Porsche AG is weighing a potential sale of its minority stake in Bugatti Rimac, a move that could significantly alter the ownership structure of one of the world’s most exclusive automotive brands.
According to published reports, Porsche is exploring options to sell its 45% interest in Bugatti Rimac in a transaction valued at roughly $1.2 billion. Parties said to be involved in discussions include investment firms HOF Capital and BlueFive Capital. The talks remain ongoing, and no agreement has been finalized.
Bugatti Rimac was formed in 2021 when Volkswagen transferred the Bugatti brand into a joint venture between Porsche AG and Rimac Group. The partnership combined Bugatti’s heritage in ultra-luxury performance cars with Rimac’s expertise in advanced electric powertrain technology. The venture delivered its first jointly developed model, the Bugatti W16 Mistral, in August 2022.
Sources familiar with the matter indicate that any transaction involving Porsche’s stake in Bugatti Rimac could also include its separate 24% ownership interest in Rimac Group. Such a move would further reduce Porsche’s exposure to the Croatian-based performance technology company.
Rimac has acknowledged that discussions are underway regarding Porsche’s future role in the joint venture, though ownership terms remain unresolved. Rimac founder Mate Rimac has also expressed interest in acquiring Porsche’s stake, a step that would give him full control of Bugatti Rimac and greater freedom to shape the company’s long-term direction.
Porsche AG itself operates within a complex ownership structure. Volkswagen holds approximately three-quarters of Porsche AG’s share capital, while Porsche SE directly owns 12.5%. The Porsche and Piëch families maintain strategic control through Porsche SE, which in turn exercises influence over Volkswagen.
The potential divestment comes as global automakers continue to reassess investments in low-volume luxury and performance brands amid shifting priorities, capital demands, and evolving technology strategies. For Bugatti Rimac, a change in ownership could influence future product planning, investment horizons, and how the iconic brand navigates an increasingly electrified performance landscape.
Whether Porsche ultimately exits the venture or reshapes its involvement, the discussions signal a pivotal moment for Bugatti Rimac just a few years after its formation.
