On August 14, on the Concept Lawn at The Quail during Monterey Car Week, Spyker unveiled the C8 Preliator XXV Coupé, an 800-horsepower, twin-turbo hypercar with a top speed beyond 217 mph. Two days later, it appeared on the Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Those are the kinds of facts that make headlines. They are not, however, the reason collectors should be paying attention.

The real story is what Spyker refused to build. In a hypercar market where dual-clutch transmissions shift in milliseconds, where hybrid systems paper over any gap in throttle response, and where digital displays have colonized nearly every surface a driver might touch, Spyker built a car with a true manual gearbox, no paddle shifters, and a cockpit where the only screen is a head-up display. That is not nostalgia. It is a specific bet about where long-term collector value actually comes from, and it is worth understanding why.

Call it the thesis of the Preliator: in a market that has spent two decades chasing horsepower, Spyker is chasing friction, the physical, occasionally punishing connection between a driver’s hand and a machine’s mechanism. That friction, not the spec sheet, is what the company is actually selling.

The Numbers Are Real. They’re Just Not the Point.

Spyker’s own figures are serious enough on their own terms: a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 800 horsepower and 1,000 Nm, roughly 738 lb-ft, of torque, packaged in a hand-built aluminum body over a completely redesigned, in-house spaceframe, good for more than 217 mph. In an era when the fastest hypercars increasingly lean on electric motors and hybrid assistance to post four-digit horsepower figures, 800 horsepower without electrification is a genuinely analog achievement.

But the figure that matters more to collectors isn’t a horsepower number, it’s a gear count. The Preliator uses a true manual gearbox: three pedals, a physical lever, and Spyker’s signature exposed shift linkage, visible rather than hidden beneath trim. There is no automated substitute pretending to be driver involvement. Spyker founder and CEO Victor Muller has framed the choice in almost moral terms: the driver decides when to shift, feels every gear change directly, and bears whatever consequences follow a mistimed one. That, in Muller’s telling, is what driving a proper sports car ought to require.

That is precisely the quality the broader market has already learned to pay for. As manufacturers retire manual transmissions from their fastest cars in favor of quicker-shifting automated gearboxes, the collector market has consistently rewarded the exceptions: hand-shifted Porsches, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis routinely command a premium over automated siblings with otherwise identical specification. Even Ferrari, an automaker that abandoned manual gearboxes in its road cars nearly two decades ago, spent part of this summer fielding speculation about whether its next retro-inspired supercar might bring the third pedal back, evidence of how much currency a stick shift still carries in a market saturated with paddle shifters.

Craftsmanship Is the Actual Product

Spyker has never competed on production scale, dealer networks, or R&D budgets comparable to Ferrari, Lamborghini, or McLaren. It competes on individuality, and the Preliator makes that explicit. Each car takes roughly 2,100 hours to build. The steering wheel alone requires four hours of hand-stitching, worked with two needles by a single craftsman. The dashboard is turned aluminum, a direct reference to Spykers built before 1925, machined by a workshop that has finished automotive parts since the same decade the company was founded. Even the screw heads inside the cabin are hand-aligned to face the same direction, a detail no owner is likely to consciously notice, which is rather the point.

That last detail is worth sitting with. It describes a manufacturing philosophy aimed less at a buyer’s first impression than at the restorer, appraiser, or historian who examines the car up close decades from now. That is how blue-chip provenance gets built: not through marketing claims, but through the kind of obsessive, invisible consistency that authenticates itself long after the fact.

Spyker’s decision to build the body in hand-formed aluminum rather than carbon fiber reinforces the same idea. Muller has said the company has always preferred aluminum specifically because it can be shaped and polished by hand, with a beauty that only deepens with age, “like a fine Cabernet.” It is a deliberate rejection of the industry’s default material, chosen because it preserves visible evidence of a human hand on every panel, the same quality that tends to make hand-built coachwork more collectible with age rather than less.

Chassis 270, and Why the Numbering Matters

The debut car, chassis 270, is described by Spyker as the last of 255 examples built since the company’s modern revival in 2000. That detail matters more than it first appears. Rather than resetting its chassis sequence with each new model, as many revived or boutique marques do, Spyker has maintained continuous numbering that ties the Preliator directly to the full production history of its modern era. For collectors who build value around documentation and production history, that continuity isn’t a footnote. It is exactly the kind of detail that makes future authentication easier, and it is a form of legitimacy a marque starting a fresh numbering system simply cannot claim.

That lineage also explains details that could otherwise read as pure styling exercises. The Preliator’s NACA ducts, fin-tail rear profile, and afterburner-inspired taillights trace to a specific historical source: Spyker’s 1914 merger with the Dutch Aircraft Factory and the 1919 Spyker C1 Aerocoque, the car that first fused the marque’s automotive and aeronautical identities. Modern Car Collector examined this revival story in detail last fall, when Spyker first reclaimed its rights and began plotting a hand-built comeback. The Preliator is the clearest expression yet of what that comeback actually looks like in metal.

Twenty-Five Cars, Individually Commissioned

Production will be limited to 25 hand-built examples, each individually commissioned rather than configured from a fixed options list. The debut car is finished in a metallic Quail Green with rose-gold flake, rose-gold brightwork throughout, and an interior trimmed in an orange-brown leather Spyker calls Tuscan Saddle. Whatever combinations the other 24 buyers eventually choose, the individually commissioned nature of the program means factory build records, the equivalent of a build sheet for a car with no fixed production run, will carry real weight for future owners trying to establish exactly how their car left the factory.

That is worth remembering the next time a Preliator crosses an auction block. Serious buyers should pay less attention to the base specification, which every example shares, and more attention to documentation of the specific commissioning choices made by each original owner. In a car this bespoke, originality isn’t only about matching numbers. It is about matching intent.

New Ownership Signals a Different Kind of Buyer

The Preliator also arrives alongside a change in Spyker’s ownership structure that says something about where capital is currently flowing into heritage manufacturing. Earlier this year, Volodymyr Nosov, founder and president of the European fintech and blockchain group W Group, whose holdings include the cryptocurrency exchange WhiteBIT, became co-owner of Spyker alongside founder Victor Muller. Both men have been explicit that this is not a plan to digitize the driving experience; Spyker’s cars are meant to remain resolutely analog, with technology confined to client experience and digital infrastructure rather than the cockpit.

Still, the arrangement is a useful data point for anyone tracking who is actually buying into legacy automotive brands right now. That shift mirrors a broader change already visible elsewhere in the hypercar world, where a new generation of collectors, drawn from entertainment, technology, and digital finance rather than traditional industrial wealth, has begun reshaping who buys these cars and why. Spyker says the partnership will also fund a Peking-to-Paris-inspired SSUV and a return to endurance GT3 racing, suggesting the Preliator is meant to be a beginning rather than a one-off statement piece.

Is This Genuinely Significant, or Simply Expensive?

Run the Preliator through the only question that actually matters: if the horsepower figure disappeared from every headline about this car, would collectors still have a reason to care? The answer is yes, and it has nothing to do with straight-line speed. It has to do with a boutique manufacturer choosing, at a moment when nearly every competitor is adding automation, to strip it away instead. A manual gearbox costs Spyker acceleration numbers. An analog cockpit costs it configurability. Hand-formed aluminum costs it manufacturing efficiency. None of those are the decisions of a company chasing a lap time.

That doesn’t make the Preliator an automatic investment, and it would be a mistake to treat it as one. Twenty-five cars from a newly recapitalized manufacturer is a thin trading history, and the real test of the Preliator’s collector standing won’t be settled at The Quail or Pebble Beach. It will be settled a decade from now, when the first examples change hands and the market decides whether Spyker’s bet on mechanical honesty holds the kind of premium that hand-shifted, hand-built cars have earned everywhere else they still exist.

The Preliator’s most radical decision wasn’t an engineering choice at all. It was a market judgment: that in a field where nearly every manufacturer is racing to automate the driver out of the loop, the more durable move might be building the one car that puts them back in it. Collectors have always paid for horsepower. What the Preliator is betting on is that they will pay just as much, maybe more, for the privilege of doing the work themselves.
